Kathy Avery

Career Counselor

Kathy has worked in the Human Services field for over 20 years. She started out in 1982 when she worked through a Certified Nursing program in high school for 3 years. She attended Norfolk State University, and completed her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. After leaving Norfolk, Virginia, Kathy relocated to Largo, Maryland where she was employed with the Arc of Prince George’s County in 2001 as an Employment Specialist. 

While employed for the Arc of Prince George’s County, Kathy pursued additional education and completed course work for a Masters degree in Public Administration at Bowie State University. Working at the Arc of PG County for 10 years enhanced her communication skills and allowed her to become a great liaison between students and organizations in the community. 

Once Kathy returned to Petersburg, Virginia, she worked at Progressive Adult Rehabilitation Center as a Work Adjustment Counselor for 2 years, and was promoted to Community Employment Coordinator in a supervisory position in the Supported Employment Department. She also worked with the Department of Aging and Rehabilitation Services and completed various training programs where she became certified as a Work Incentive Specialist for Social Security Insurance and completed a Management Training Series. Kathy was able to attend several collaboration meetings with other organizations looking to hire individuals for multiple employment opportunities. She enjoys working in the community and being able to assist students to obtain job opportunities that not only enhance their lives, but also their well being.
